Why I started a sports podcast

I have a streak in me that feels the need to say something. Anything.

Why is a white middle class American male doing a sports podcast? It seems like a rhetorical question as it seems every podcaster is a white middle class American male.

WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO START A PODCAST

It’s very simple… I have a streak in me that feels the need to say something. Anything. And in the course of working on many different things in technology, many things come up and I just think? “Why do they get to do that? I can do that!” That’s almost always the trigger. Like the Mass-hole mantra, “wha’ ya think ya betta than me?” I always take what someone is doing and go? I can do that.

WHAT WAS MY FIRST PODCAST

My first foray into podcasting was way back in probably? 2008-9 range while working at AOL/Gamedaily. Libe Goad hosted it, and I came in hot as the 3rd man in for little video game podcast. I was always over the top and over bearing, but I felt in my element. That podcast had we kept it going would probably be massive by now, but like everything at AOL we were always just checking boxes.

The thing sounded amazing and we had full on studios with sound engineers. I am sure there are a few good episodes out there somewhere but that was the first time I got the bug.

I was always a podcast consumer especially of Bill Simmons and anything on Grantland, but my experience had been with a high end studio so it seemed out the question to be able to do it one’s self.

The next time it came up again was ironically with John Benyamine (who was founded Gamedaily) but 10 years later. We were working at this latest video game content venture Greenlight, and I was getting pulled all over the place. One of the things I worked on was livestream and video productions, and that led me down the Youtube hole…

HOW DID I GET INTO PODCASTING

So let me back track a bit. I was following the soccer/Football community on YouTube and trying to learn how to play soccer at 40 years old, this always was segueing into the early influencer era. So this stuff was on my mind – the single creator. I was inspired by a couple of soccer specific channels and personalities… TrueGeordie, The Blue Moon Rising and Spencer FC….

HOW DID I FIND A TOPIC TO PODCAST ABOUT

Back to JB and podcasts… The technology and the availability were converging and I started live streaming using OBS on to YouTube. I was working in video production and I wanted to know how the fuck these 12 year olds had massive channels? Why can’t I do it. And so…. Crap Football, Crap Pundit was born. There I learned how to make livestream videos and make a little bit of content and I focused on my beloved Manchester City Football Club.

I figured if I am going to learn about broadcasting, it needs to be about a topic I love, and I love football…. Since 2010 I have watched every single Manchester City game I could reasonably (and unreasonable watch) Anyway…. I am a full season into YouTubing… and just sharing it with the boys over at InterCity League My goal is to be consistent. All I cared about with the channel, was not growth, but just to do it for myself… and I did. There are over 100 videos…. Somewhere after number 50, I found Anchor.fm and that is when the podcast began.

WHAT DID I USE TO RECORD MY FIRST PODCAST

Anchor made it INCREDIBLY easy to create podcast… All my worries, concerns and fears went out the window. And I’ve been posting there ever since… under Crap football, Crap Podcast – English Football reviews with a Man City bias

For this season, I have a partner, Mike Salerno, and we’re started The Squeaky Bum Time Podcast where we’ve been posting 2x a week so far for 5 weeks. It’s going well. And It is a thing I do for joy
