Does progressivism ever stop and say? You know what? We are good here.
No it doesn’t. That is the purpose of conservatism. To check the excesses of progressive movement in culture.
Progressives never seem to go back and revise an idea and say? Ooh. Maybe that was a bad idea. It seems whenever we look back at older policy, it is that we didn’t do ENOUGH of the progressive thing.
Why am I bringing this up? Well, this week the United Kingdom legalized assisted death. And I think its a dangerous proposition.
On the surface, it is another moment to discuss individual rights. People should be able to do what they want with their body, as long as it’s not a vaccine. This includes choices like abortion or changing gender.
I’m probably going to ramble and go all over the place but I have some thoughts on this.
First, on the surface we don’t want people to suffer. We would like to let a person who is at the depths of dementia end their life. Ok.
We’d like a terminal cancer patient to choose to end their life. This consideration is for when there are literally months left in their life. Ok. That makes sense.
I think we somewhat agree there. But let’s take a deeper look. We are trying to alleviate pain. Ok. Who defines pain? When do we stop the definition? Who gets to decide when you are in enough pain? How much pain is the right amount for you to be allowed to end your life?
Does this get linked to health care? Or is it on Medicare? What if we consider the cost-benefit of death versus life-saving surgery for Grandma? It will give her another two months. (maybe.)
What is going to stop doctors from suggesting to families to convince people to let themselves die? They already convinced whole states to take opioid’s?
We are going to trust the same medical establishment that gave us all the vaccine notes? We are going to trust the same medical establishment that didn’t trust us to make decisions about COVID?
We’re going to give these institutions power over our life or death at the end of life. Do we really think they will have our interests at hand?
Just look at what has happened with Canada. Canada has increased each year since its legalization in 2016:
2019: 5,661 deaths
2020: 7,603 deaths
2021: 10,064 deaths
2022: 13,241 deaths
With those increases they are now adding MENTAL ILLNESS to the list of options that allow for state assisted death:
That’s just a small country. What will happen in the United Kingdom? A depressed country with its own problems…
My thoughts are that we lack morality. When we focus on the materialistic, individualistic world, it seems logical. Your life, your self-important little life, becomes the be all and end all of all decisions. When your life or death is based on an cost, what is going to happen?
Again, the material world is tiny to the meaning of life.
We have to get back to big universal truths. All life matters. No to the death penalty. No to war. No to abortion as birth control. No to killing your grand parents. Not hard. I stand with the Catholic Church on this one
We need to be CONSERVATIVE when we think about death.
We need to CONSERVATIVE when we are thinking about ending life based on pain.
We need to be CONSERVATIVE when thinking about irrevocable treatments when people FEEL a certain way.
Pain is relative. Suffering is part of life. If we give people a way out, they will.
I am not going to be ashamed or hide my Faith on this one. Killing is wrong, its part of the Ten Commandments and a fundamental Christian doctrine. We are children of God and we do not get to decide when God takes us.
I am not insensitive and appreciate everyone’s feelings. These are just my thoughts today. And I am sure there are dozens and dozens of anecdotes to refute this stance.
My primary worry is the involvement of the state. I am also concerned about the belief that we puny humans know better than the divine.
