Saw Gladiator II yesterday. My initial reaction was – I don’t like this movie. Somewhere in the middle of the movie I wanted to go home. The action stuff was good. Its a big spectacle. Denzel Washington was really good.
But the movie just didn’t work. I was disappointed in my guy Paul Mescal (if you want to see him in something incredible see Normal People on Hulu)
The movie is chunkily connected to the first movie and the movie plot has the same beats. I think frankly, Russell Crowe made the first Gladiator and Mescal just isn’t Russell Crowe (who is?)
Goes to a larger point? Do we have any young movie stars anymore? Seems all we have are 60 year old men from 1990’s? That’s going to be a problem.
Do I recommend the movie? I give it a tepid recommendation. Go see it, if only because it’s nice to go to the movies, especially as it’s mostly fun. But try not to get annoyed at what it isn’t. It isn’t a great movie.
I like to steal things from twitter and then share them as my own on Facebook. Seems to work pretty well and I get good responses.
Find a job is REALLY hard. I have applied to over 200 positions and I have not had one even screening call. Scary. Or AI or I am old.
On the sport front – the NBA season is moving a long and the East is terrible. The Lakers are fun. But this league needs to do something to bring some juice to the games. I have thoughts – which I wrote about here Why We Need to Believe in Sport: The Kayfabe Effect. This was really about basketball.
Sport needs NARRATIVES and STORIES. It’s gotta get more like wrestling and less like journalism.
I’m still having a terrible time getting off of social media. I’m lousy with managing my time. I am addicted and it makes me angry.
I feel much better when I write and create these posts. Having people interact with them is more satisfying than reading an hour’s worth of tweets.
